Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will not return to The NFL Today this fall, the sports commentators announced Monday.
Former quarterback Esiason broke his news on his WFAN morning radio show Boomer and Gio.
“For the last two months, you know, I’ve been trying to figure out what I wanted to do and where I want to be,” he said. “I am stepping away from The NFL Today on CBS, more their decision than maybe mine, but I really thought that the Super Bowl was my swan song.”
Simms announced his exit Monday via a post on X. “Great 26 year run with CBS SPORTS,” he wrote. “Even though that part of my career is over I look forward to what is next.”
Matt Ryan, a quarterback who retired from the NFL in April, will become part of The NFL Today in Simms and Esiason’s wake, CBS announced Monday. He’ll join remaining analysts James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill COwher and JJ Watt.
“Phil and Boomer set the standard of excellence for NFL analysts,” said David Berson, CBS Sports president and CEO. “We are so grateful for their immeasurable contributions to CBS Sports. We genuinely thank them for being incredible teammates and for their passion, dedication and commitment to elevating CBS Sports’ NFL coverage every season.”
Are you bummed that Simms and Esiason won’t be back? Hit the comments with your thoughts!
I love great news on a Monday.
Boomer was great sad To c m go.
I can do without Boomer, but always thought Simms had great insight. And this comes from Jets fan😜
I’m not surprised about Phil. I noticed that he wasn’t on his game (pun intended) during the last season. I am surprised about Boomer, but maybe they wanted to add JJ Watt full time this coming season.
I haven’t really thought Phil’s been on his game since they pulled him from the play-by-play booth with Nantz and replaced him with Romo a few years back. He always seemed to take a back seat and be in Boomer’s shadow somewhat on the NFL Today.
As for Boomer, I thought he really found his element on the NFL Today after his disastrous teamup with Al Michaels on MNF in the late 90s. I thought Boomer was always articulate and insightful with his comments, so I’m little surprised they’ve seemingly dropped him in favor of Matt Ryan, who as far as I know, has no signficant broadcasting experience.
Please please please tell me Romo is next to go.
I just hate they are both being replaced. I think all these shows have too many guys sitting at the desk. They all have to say something every break and they rush through with barely enough breath to understand them. Scale back to three guys -max.
Phil and Boomer brought class, consistency and knowledge to the game analysis. They also always seemed somewhat frustrated how “different” the game has become from the old days when they played. All the best to them both. Time for some new faces and opinions. Also, How Cowher stayed at age 66 is beyond me. He seems to be about one wrong comment away from a heart attack sometimes.
Not particularly! Time for some new perspectives!! Good luck to them though 👏
Meh, I mean, you need to buy a cable package to watch the NFL these days anyways. I won’t pay to watch what was free. It’s all corporate greed right now, the way I see it and I’m sure most do as well.
I think I’ve watched 5 NFL games in the past 2 yrs. I simply won’t pay a premium to watch. But beware, a PPV SB may be in your future the way this is going.
I am pissed!!! BOOMER & PHIL ALL CLASS!
Not happy about their departure. Sorry but i will no longer watch the show
I’ll watch the game but will find something to do when the show is on. Bye CBS
They will be missed
Did an excellent job. Wish it wasn’t so. But they have to do what’s best for them.Have fun guys with whatever
CBS will save $200,000 simply by not having to buy Phil’s makeup each week.
And big jaw, little else cowher remains. Love it when big wigs outthink themselves. Oh, why not Nate too, wouldn’t be missed !
Yes to Boomer! No to whiney Simms. Matt Ryan is dull
Now its time for Fox to clean out their dead wood.
I’ll miss Boomer more than Phil, and we’ll see what Ryan brings to the table.
About time
Boring compared to fox
Big mistake. Now I will only watch FOX
The exec who made the decision should be fired!
